Randy Stewart

Randy Stewart, Ph.D., is entrepreneur with more than 25 years experience in the development of new technologies, building teams and delivering new solutions to the marketplace.

After receiving a BA in Chemistry from WVU, Randy began his career as a chemist with the Eastman Kodak, synthesizing photo chemicals for new and existing Kodak products. Two years of industrial chemistry sent Randy off to graduate school where he earned a Ph.D. in Chemistry from NCSU, while publishing on topics related to structure and bonding in organometallic chemistry. Dr. Stewart then traveled to Harvard University as a National Institutes of Health Fellow and expanded his studies on solid materials to include the chemistry and physics of surfaces. It was during these years in Cambridge that he consulted with the Cambridge/Boston venture capital community, evaluating business plans for new technology ventures. This was to become a period that influenced and led to changes in his future career.

In a unique opportunity, Randy joined GE Corporate R&D, first as a member of a technology team, and then given greater responsibilities building new exploratory research efforts. When GE exited defense industries in 1993, Randy acquired a technology for optical data transfer that was being developed by GE for aerospace applications, and with continued support from the U.S. DOD, he formed MOEC. Under his guidance, MOEC became an international supplier of components to the telecom industry, providing awarding winning products for optical power control in fiber optic systems. In 2003, with the collapse of the telecom industrial sector, Randy wound down MOEC, selling the assets to other companies.

In 2003, Randy organized The Colonie Group (TCG), a network of experienced executives that continue to bring new solutions to the marketplace. Since it’s formation, TCG has expanded its business relations working with many Fortune 1000 companies. In addition to these activities, Dr. Stewart has on occasion taken assignment as a member of the management team to assist the rapid growth of the client company. Examples are:

  • Managing Partner for Mountain State Systems LLC; a contract manufacturer for short run technology products. Developed a team of experienced manufacturing personnel to prepare manufacturing documentation and produce products for external clients on new and short run products. This business was acquired after three profitable years.
  • Executive Vice President of Science and Technology Development for Nano-Terra, Inc.; a Cambridge, MA, technology development company. In the largest IP deal every done by Harvard University, Nano-Terra acquired 58 patents and created product development partnerships to exploit the technologies by forging commercial technology deals with Fortune 500 companies.
  • CEO of e-Surfaces, Inc. (ESI); a digital media company that has created new network methods for demographically targeted local advertising.

Dr. Stewart has been awarded 21 patents and has authored 25 peer review technical publications. He has served on numerous committees for the National Science Foundation and the New York State Energy Research & Development Authority. He was a member of the NSF Panel creating the Advanced Materials and Processing Program (AMPP), and served on the external advisory group for the Consortium for Lightforce Dynamics in the Department of Physics at Harvard University.

Dr. Stewart was named as an Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year in 2001.
